Join AFOS for the Febuary Tuesday Talk

AFOS Member, Dr. William Hefner, will present a 1-hr COPE accredited course titled "A Potpourri of Perplexion".  This course is designed to review key findings in two relatively common disease processes that include optic nerve presentations. Additionally, there will be an introduction to a childhood cancer with ocular manifestations that led to definitive diagnosis and management.

Dr. Bill Hefner

William F. Hefner, O.D., M.Ed., M.S.S., F.A.A.O.

A native Kansan, Dr. Hefner spent 20 years in private practice in Topeka, KS, specializing in pediatric and family practice optometry, before rejoining the faculty at Pacific University College of Optometry in 2017.  In 2021, Dr. Hefner retired from the United States Air Force after 24 years of service, the last nine of which he served as the Medical Group Commander for the 190th Air Refueling Wing in Topeka, KS.  During those 24 years of service, Dr. Hefner provided humanitarian health care in El Salvador, Armenia and Trinidad and Tobago.  Dr. Hefner has served as the Associate Dean of Clinical Programs at Pacific University College of Optometry since July 1, 2021

Dr Hefner is the current President of the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association and has served as President of the Kansas Optometric Association and the Heart of America Contact Lens Society.  Dr Hefner is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.  Additionally, Dr. Hefner has served the profession as a member of AOA’s Student-Faculty Liaison Committee, AOA’s Leadership Development Committee, AAO’s Student-Faculty Liaison Committee, Program Chair of the AAO’s Education SIG, Chair of ASCO’s Clinic Directors/Administrators SIG, Chair of the Armed Forces Optometric Society, and he even spent eight years as a member of the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education, his last year as vice-chair.  Dr. Hefner has been recognized with numerous awards including the 2024 OOPA President’s Award, the 2021 American Optometric Student Association Faculty of the Year, the 2019 Pacific University Provost’s Junior Faculty Award for Service, the 2016 Armed Forces Optometrist of the Year for the Reserve Forces, the 2006 Air National Guard Optometrist of the Year, the 2002 Kansas Optometric Association’s Young Optometrist of the Year and the 2001 Kansas Optometric Association’s Vision Service Award.

Dr. Hefner and his wife Dawn live in Forest Grove, OR with their two children, Chloe and Luke.
